What is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is bacterial infection passed from one person to another during sex. Gonorrhoea is much less common than Chlamydia, but about 1% of people under 25 tested will have it.

Gonorrhoea symptoms

10% of men and 80% of women have no symptoms but symptoms may include;

In women

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pain when passing urine
  • Lower abdominal pain

In men

  • A white, yellow, or green discharge from the tip of the penis
  • Pain when passing urine
  • Pain or tenderness in the testicles

In Greater Manchester when you are screened for Chlamydia you will also be tested for Gonorrhoea.

What is the treatment ?

If your test is positive for Gonorrhoea you will be asked to attend a specialist sexual health clinic where your will have another test to check that the infection responds to the antibiotic you have been given.
